Google and Quantum Computers

by Ziuby

Google's scientists have figured and solved the biggest problem faced during the
development of quantum computers.

The quantum computer can calculate something in few seconds where same calculations
can took a year to solve by using the current computers. Scientists are saying that they
reached nearby half way to make the quantum computers reality.

The quantum computers uses the "qubits" instead of "bits". The normal computers uses the
"bits" threw which it is able to store information as a 1 or a 0 but using "qubits
technology" it is possible to store the information as a 1 and a 0 both. So it will be
storing the more information than the "bits".

The trouble faced by the scientists was that the qubits are incredibly unstable and makes
a lot of errors. The qubits hold the information only for a fraction of a second and also
for that fraction of second it requires the tempreture nearby zero and a noise free
environment.

The Google's researchers has figured out how to stabilize an array of nine qubits.

Duck Duck Go .. it's not a typo !

by Ziuby

The title tells us a lot .. well it doesn't really ! If one wants to make a guess a restaurant that serves Duck for take away might be your guess. But it isn't so. If looking at the current market trend one makes a guess that it an IT company or something related to the technology then you are spot on ! So the question now is .. What is Duck Duck Go ?

DuckDuckGo (DDG) is an Internet search engine that emphasizes protecting searchers' privacy and avoiding filter bubble of personalized search results. DuckDuckGo distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users and by deliberately showing all users the same search results for a given search term.DuckDuckGo was founded by Gabriel Weinberg, an entrepreneur whose last venture,The names Database was acquired by United Online in 2006 for $10 million.

In July 2010, Weinberg started a DuckDuckGo community website to allow the public to report problems, discuss means of spreading the use of the search engine, request features, and discuss open sourcing the code. By May 2012, the search engine was attracting 1.5 million searches a day. Weinberg reported that it had earnedUS$115,000 in revenue in 2011 and had three employees, plus a small number of contractors.Compete.com estimated 277,512 monthly visitors to the site in August 2012.[On April 12, 2011, Alexa reported a 3-month growth rate of 51%.

In May 2014, DuckDuckGo released a redesigned version to beta testers through DuckDuckHack. On 21 May 2014, DuckDuckGo officially released the redesigned version that focused on smarter answers and a more refined look. The new version added many new features such as images, local search, auto-suggest, weather, recipes and more.

Google enjoys a lot of the market supremacy when it comes to search engines. Small players like Qwant or DDG coming into the market and gunning for Google. This will lead to some stiff competition that will prove beneficial for the public.

Google Flight Search

by Ziuby

The name ‘Google’ started as a search engine. Over the past decade, the company has dwelled into the mobile market with their ground-breaking Android OS and enjoyed amazing success. But at its core, the company still is a search-centric application provider.

After the successful deployment of Google Maps, naturally, there are some advancements to be made. Therefore Google has shifted its focus onto services which utilize the already existing (and massive) cartographic data.  Enter Google Flight Search; an application designed for both desktop and mobile users and created as an augment of Google Maps. It is a simple as it sounds. The user can enter a destination and instantly get flight options thereto. The app will also let the user compare several flight options based on expense or time requirements. This is great for frequent flyers who had to previously rely completely on sources such as an Online Travel Agents (OTAs).

There are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, the app does not support ticket bookings yet. So although you can extensively compare flight plans, you cannot make one. However this might be a short-lived quirk as Google is already in talks for partnering with airlines , allowing for direct ticket booking through the app.

Secondly, this might affect the business of OTAs. This is not hard to imagine as online services have been known to impact the established supplier-dealer business structure. A good example is Flipkart. Although this may sound bad for the existing service providers, the ultimate benefactor is the consumer. Online services help create competition and also obviate some involved costs in the process, leading to an overall reduction in price.

Google had also launched a similar service called Google Hotel Search. The response to that app has been lukewarm but still, it is a useful app, even if it’s only used for cross-referencing information. The mobile market is a big pie and everyone wants a piece. Google has been a pioneer in service applications. The impact of such apps might be somewhat small at the time of launch but after a few years when the app ecosphere is given time to grow, it might become the go-to norm. In a market like India, there is serious money to be made with such apps.

Google says bye bye to CAPTCHAs, well almost

by Ziuby

Sick of typing those annoying, and barely readable, letters and numbers to prove to a website that you're not a robot or a spammer?

You may be in luck.

Google announced Wednesday that the company is trying to get rid of those annoying tasks called CAPTCHAs, which is short for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. Instead of requiring that users fill in the letters and numbers shown in a distorted image, sites that use Google's reCAPTCHA service will be able to use just one click, answering a simple question: Are you a robot? "reCAPTCHA protects the websites you love from spam and abuse," wrote Vinay Shet, product manager for Google's reCAPTCHA service, in a blog post. "For years, we've prompted users to confirm they aren't robots by asking them to read distorted text and type it into a box... But, we figured it would be easier to just directly ask our users whether or not they are robots. So, we did! "

Google on Wednesday began rolling out a new API that rethinks the reCAPTCHA experience.
CAPTCHA "can be hard to read and frustrating for people, particularly on mobile devices," said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with ZK Research. "People often have to put in the text several times. On the surface, this seems a good way to improve the user experience. It still requires human intervention, just something simpler." CAPTCHAs were created to foil computer programs that hackers or spammers use to troll for access to websites or to collect email addresses.

Google said CAPTCHAs are less useful than they have been, although they are still frustrating to everyday users. "CAPTCHAs have long relied on the inability of robots to solve distorted text,' wrote Shet. "However, our research recently showed that today's artificial intelligence technology can solve even the most difficult variant of distorted text at 99.8% accuracy. Thus distorted text, on its own, is no longer a dependable test."
The new API, along with Google's ability to analyze a user's actions -- before, during, and after clicking on the reCAPTCHA box -- let's the new technology figure out if the user is human or not.
"The new API is the next step in this steady evolution," Shet stated. "Now humans can just check the box and in most cases, they're through the challenge."

Don't get too excited just yet, though. Those CAPTCHAs aren't going away all together.
If the reCAPTCHA service can't definitively tell if a user is a person, a spammer or a hacker-based bot, a CAPTCHA will appear and ask for more clues.

China blocked the Gmail services

by Ziuby

Google Inc's #Gmail was blocked in China after months of disruptions to the world's biggest email service, with an anti-censorship advocate suggesting the Great Firewall was to blame. A #China-based freedom of speech advocacy group #'GreatFire.org' said, Large numbers of Gmail Web addresses were cut off in China.

The country is host to the world's most sophisticated internet censorship mechanism, known as the Great Firewall of China. Google's own Transparency Report, which shows real-time traffic to Google services, displayed a sharp drop-off in traffic to Gmail from China. A Singapore-based spokesman for Google wrote in an email that they've checked and there's nothing wrong on their end.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she did not know anything about Gmail being blocked, adding that the government was committed to providing a good business environment for foreign investors.

One popular way to get around China's internet censorship is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which allows unhindered access to blocked sites and services.

"Qwant an Alternative Google"

by Ziuby

A company from a small office near the banks of the river Seine has put on gloves and will try to take on Google. The product is a French search engine called #Qwant. The French start-up, whose product was released 18 months ago, is tapping into growing anger here that Google has too much control over how Europeans surf the web.

“There’s a need for a choice,” Jean Manuel Rozan, a former financier who co-founded #Qwant in 2011, said recently over a cup of coffee. Europe is the only place in the world where people think that Google is the Internet. To stand out from the crowd, Qwant sold a 20 percent stake to Axel Springer, the German publisher, this year for roughly $6 million, mostly to buy European servers.

Along with other Google alternatives like #DuckDuckGo and #Ixquick, a Dutch search engine, Qwant says it does not track people’s online movements and sells advertising based only on individuals’ search queries.
Qwant also plans to release a child-friendly search engine — Qwant Junior — in early 2015.

If you have three million children who will search on Qwant, then there’ll be six million parents who will know about Qwant, said Éric Leandri, another of the start-up’s co-founders, who added that the start-up was in discussions with Axel Springer to become the default search engine on some of the publisher’s websites.

Despite previous failures to a build a credible European search engine, Qwant’s co-founders hope its focus on privacy and attempts to combine social media posts and traditional search results will set it apart from Google, whose projects are as diverse as a smartphone operating system and trying to develop driverless cars.

We want to give results from both the web and social networks,” said Mr. Rozan of Qwant. “If we’re just going to offer the same service as Google, we should stop now.
