It encompasses the modifications to corporate intranets  and other classic software platforms used by many large companies to organize their communication, collaboration and other aspects of their intranets. This is also generally thought to include the use of a standard External Social Networking Service to generate visibility for an enterprise.

Emerging Trends in Enterprise Social Networking:
Many companies are starting to implement Enterprise social networks to promote collaboration amongst their employees. Vendors are now starting to use Enterprise social networking as a way to help out the different companies. Some companies are starting to tell and teach their employees about cloud computing and software as a Services (SaaS). These new technologies are added to enterprise social networks. These networks are being implemented to get employees collaborating and sharing tips and ideas about how to improve the work and workplace. Some social networks are homegrown systems that are built internally. Companies are using social networks to trade or contact information amongst team members or other people who are part of the company. Sometimes it also mean trading documents in real time.
Business Impacts:
Companies such as Jive Software and IBM have recently been doing research to see how social networking can impact the enterprise networks. Different companies creating their own internal social networking sites. IBM is one example and they have created the Beehive research project, based on their Lotus Connections product. Another example is Atos, which is deploying it’s in house BlueKiwi product across all 80,000 employees to achieve its Zero Email ambition by end of 2013. Many companies are encouraging employees to use their social networks so they can connect with other employees, help people socialize when they take a break, or even help contribute to other work-related issues. Some companies are even joining typical social networking sites like Facebook to gain more clients, communicate with their clients, or target individuals based on their likes. Main purposes of these companies want to gain the clients trust.
Application of Enterprise Social Networking:
Medpedia is one of about 70 medical wikis that allows physicians and researchers to share information. While the information is free and publicly available, contributions are limited to those provided by medical professionals.
1. Intellipedia is a set of 3 wikis used by the US intelligence community to share information of varying classifications.
2. Deloitte has been a pioneer in its use of the corporate social networking applications for consulting.
Issues related to Enterprise Social Networking :
1. Transparency
The sharing of information across the enterprise through via social networking creates a transparency that may or may not necessarily be welcomed by all sectors of the Management.
2. Perception
It is one of the important issue in Social network as there is often supposition that social networking will not work well in a particular industry or that its use may be perceived as unprofessional. In addition the ability to justify the use of enterprise social networking, based on return on investment is not readily apparent. Members of traditional or conservative organizations perceive social networking as a time wasting tool. However once employees see usage by other employees, they often begin seeing the value and hence engaging and contributing content.
3. Lack of adoption
If training in the use of Enterprise social networking tools is not provided to employees who do not have experience using them or who do not have any information about its use, they are unlikely to be widely adopted. The use of this must be championed at the highest levels of the enterprise to provide the resources needed and promote adoption throughout the organization. Only 20% of organizations see value in social collaboration product, primarily due to lack of change management provided during mount.
